The 2015 VLGA Jamboree took place at Sherwood Forest Golf Club from 4th to 6th August.
Day 1 Tuesday 4th August Midlands v North
We arrived at the club early to find very windy conditions, probably gusting at around a 3 club wind. The players were all looking forward to getting underway. Pairings were all strong with 2 rookies this year and we looked to getting off to a good start. The wind picked up although it was quite sunny. Spectators were arriving throughout the morning and witnessed some spectacular golf by both teams. The morning foursomes finished 2-1 to the North. We weren't deterred though and went out full of determination in the afternoon for the singles. The matches were all very close with several going to the 18th. We tied the singles and finished 5-4 down. South v Scotland result was 6½ - 2½ to the South
Day 2 Wednesday 5th August Midlands v South
Full of excitement the Midlands prepared to take on the defending champions, the South. Again our pairings were strong and by lunchtime we had taken a 3 -0 lead. What a fantastic morning with some spectacular golf and some amazing recoveries. The weather picked up towards lunchtime and we were blessed with warm sunshine. We all went into lunch feeling full of enthusiasm, but still remaining calm, knowing we only needed 2 points from the afternoon singles to win. This proved difficult as we know the South weren't going to take this lying down. We eventually won 5-4 and we all breathed a sigh of relief as the point went to us. All to play for on the last day. North v Scotland result was 5½ - 3½ to the North.
Day 3 Thursday 6th August Midlands v Scotland
With everything to play for, with points possibly being decided on count back we went out all guns blazing in the foursomes and came in at lunchtime 3-0 up again. Our foursome's record was fantastic over the 3 days with 9 matches played and only 2 lost. This proved a huge advantage going into the afternoon singles and we won the match 6-3. All that now remained was to wait for the North v South result. All matches were very close with 4 of the singles going to the wire. The North won, which meant the Midlands were outright runners up, with only 1 point separating the teams.
Thank you to all the team members for your enthusiasm, commitment, determination and support throughout the week. A special thanks to my Vice-Captain Cindy Ireland and President Jean Johnson for all your support. You were great fun to be with and the golf was fantastic. It's not going to be long before the Midlands bring home the Miller Stirling Salver.
Thank you also to all the supporters for making to the trip to Sherwood. I am sure you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. It certainly made all the difference having you there.
