Royal St Davids is set on the coast in Harlech and is one of the best places for a game of golf in ther world. This was the venue for the Brenda King Foursomes on 24th/25th July 2023. Established in 1894 the Harlech links provides a tremendous test of seaside golf in a matchless setting, with Harlech Castle standing sentinel above the course with the Snowdonia mountain range providing a breathtaking backdrop.
A field of 86 pairs from 80 clubs from all over the country were all excited to to be gathering to take part in this prestidgiuos event. The field contains many international players, regional, county and ex county players. Handicaps ranged from +2 through to 20. The club welcomed us and the weather for the practice day was unexpectedly kind. The course after the recent rain was in great condition with the greens running true. The views around the course were spectacular with Mount Snowdon in the distance.
The club provided us with an army of helpers and Lady Captain, Ann Marie was most helpful. We were all expecting poor weather on Round 1 and to our surprise there were light winds and sunshine. Scores from the top players were good and the leading score came from local players Ann Lewis and Jeanette Williams with a gross score of 77. This was closely followed by Ex MV Mary Maclaren and Kate Evans.on 79. Helen Lowe (Scraptoft) and her partner, British champion Jackie Foster on 80 then MV Captain, Sally Sketcher (Trentham) and Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath) on 81. The best nett of Round 1 came for Hadley Wood players Breda Franzmann and Helen Constantinou with a score of 67.
Our players dinner proved very enjoyable with bingo providing great fun and big prizes to be won. This was followed by a lovely meal. Great camaradie was enjoyed by all the players. We were all excited to welcome the local male voice choir and they didn’t disappoint. Wales is known as the land of song and what a wonderful sound they produced.
Round 2 and all to play for with light winds again and improving weather. By the end of play the sun had come out and the top players were all fighting for the winning position. The places for the winning gross scores all came down to the last few holes. With the sun shining Sally and Sue made a vital birdie on 17 and, with the leaders floundering, that putt was crucial and was to give them the title by 1 shot with a gross score of 158 with Mary Maclaren /Kate Evans runners up.
