Hawkstone Park is set in beautiful countryside on the site of The Follies a stunning historical site with hillside grotto. Bridges, caves, towers and much more. Their signature hole stands at the base of the Follies.. A record entry this year of 17 teams entered with 16 eventually taking part from 9th to 11th October. We were last here in 2006 for the 2nd year of this tournament, where the entertainment was a talk from Tanners Wines. On that occasion there were only 9 teams taking part. How things have changed and moved forward with this competition growing each year. We were blessed with fantastic weather for the first 2 days and the course had stood up well to all the wet weather they had experienced in recent weeks. The green staff had done a great job in ensuring the course was playable. The course has some memorable holes and required thinking our way round with tricky greens and dog legs.
The greensome as always, produced some great scores with Jayne Fletcher and Bev Chattaway for Staffordshire taking 1st place with 40pts. Debbie Warren/ Ann Fern Staffordshire 38 pts and Tania Pearce /Ann Peters Shropshire 35pts.
Tuesday and the start of the stroke play and round 1 of the counties playing for the Sue Timberlake Bowl now in its 24th year. We were mindful of the weather forecast for the coming week and hoping the storm would pass through. Some great scores returned, both individual and for the teams. Again the weather was kind and we were all looking forward to players dinner and entertainment for Motown Motion. A decision was made to cancel round 2 due to the rain that was forecast overnight and for most of the rest of the day,. Tuesdays scores would be used to calculate the overall winners.
The relief of not playing on Wednesday meant everyone could really relax and enjoy the entertainment. We all had great time and were taken back to our youth with Motown Motion. Prizegiving took place in the morning attended by everyone. Gill Spencer President presented the prizes and the Lady Vice-Captain Catherine Wilson welcomed us all to Hawkstone. Park. A big thankyou to all at the club who made us very welcome and all who helped make this tournament a great success. Special thanks to Louis Goff, Secretary. Great see so many new Midland Vets playing in this tournament for the 1st time and congratulations to all the prizewinners The association will continue to thrive with your support at this and other events.
